So, what finally triggered my plunge into modular was in March 2011 discovering an extensive article in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundonsound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Sound On Sound<\/a> (originally published in 2009)- &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundonsound.com\/techniques\/sos-guide-choosing-modular-synth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The SOS Guide To Choosing A Modular Synth<\/a>&#8216;. An additional factor was that a friend of mine had been name-checked in the article &#8211; one <a href=\"https:\/\/lesterbarnes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Lester Barnes<\/a>!<br>So, the next obvious move was to seek advice from Lester and when I asked if I could come and see his modular synth, I should have known that I was in trouble when his answer was &#8216;which one?&#8217;.<br>After further research I decided to go for the Eurorack option buying a Doepfer case and mostly Doepfer modules apart from three <a href=\"https:\/\/tiptopaudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">TipTop Audio<\/a> z3000 oscillators. So the journey began . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"687\" src=\"https:\/\/williegeemusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/First-Modular-1024x687.webp\" alt=\"Eurorack Modular 2011\" class=\"wp-image-654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/williegeemusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/First-Modular-1024x687.webp 1024w, https:\/\/williegeemusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/First-Modular-300x201.webp 300w, https:\/\/williegeemusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/First-Modular-768x516.webp 768w, https:\/\/williegeemusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/First-Modular-1536x1031.webp 1536w, https:\/\/williegeemusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/First-Modular-scaled.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes were slow but I rapidly found that certain modules didn&#8217;t do it for me and these were replaced &#8211; a process that still goes on to this day. It now amuses me to see that the above picture of my first full case is titled &#8216;complete&#8217;! Ha!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being particularly drawn to sequencers, my first major addition was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.analoguesolutions.com\/\">Analogue Solutions<\/a> Oberkorn 3 which sat nicely on the Doepfer case, which itself I had enclosed in a rather crude DIY pine outer case.<br>So that was 2011 and the most recent module I have purchased (June 2024) is the AJH Sonic XV filter . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/williegeemusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Modular_01_04_12-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-655\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had been using soft synths for several years producing instrumental music but had the itch to be more &#8216;hands on&#8217; rather than tweaking presets.
